Single Review: John Rush – Merry Christmas

It’s finally the time of year where it’s acceptable to listen to Christmas songs and what better way to start off the festivities with Glaswegian singer songwriter, John Rush‘s latest release, Merry Christmas. This fun, catchy track will inevitably get you in the Christmas spirit with it’s soulful lyrics, magical melodies and of course we can’t forget about the sleigh bells!

2020 has certainly been challenging so it’s great to see musicians like John creating a feel-good festive tune like Merry Christmas to take our minds off the pandemic. The track isn’t short of clever lyrics that leave listeners with a smile on their face: ‘And your mum’s choked up inside cause your dad’s on his fourth or fifth mulled wine‘.

It takes a special type of musician to pull off a Christmas song and John smashes it with ease. The jazz / soul style to the track which certainly makes it stand out to any other Christmas track I’ve heard this year. Even if Christmas tracks aren’t your thing, I can guarantee you will hear the varied talents within the song.

I’ve been a fan of John Rush ever since I saw him perform an acoustic set at Room 2 in Glasgow last year and it won’t be long till you will be too! With a headlining slot at Saint Luke’s scheduled for next year (tickets available here) and the successful release of his latest single, Sister, it’s clear John is heading for big things.
