Single Review: Chris Greig & The Merchants – Tired Eyes

By Orla Brady

Despite the chaos of 2020, Chris Greig & The Merchants have released three well received singles, one of which even made it onto an episode of E4’s Made In Chelsea. They have also appeared on Spotify’s official playlist ‘We Are Glasgow’ and have also been featured on BBC Introducing.

Last month, the four-piece released their new single Tired Eyes, informing fans upon its release that the song was recorded through Zoom. With this knowledge, we may wonder whether music that is created virtually could possibly match up to music created in the studio. In Tired Eyes, Chris Greig & The Merchants have confirmed that with talent, dedication and solid teamwork, yes it absolutely can.

It is a track which fits perfectly into their self-prescribed genre of ‘unapologetic, feel-good indie-rock music’, hitting us with bold, colourful guitar riffs and percussion from the first note. This energy is sustained during the entire song and is reflected through the boys’ first-class musicianship, tight song structure and frontman Chris’ rousing vocal ability.

It is truly admirable that these guys have been able to project such high levels of positivity and passion through their music during these difficult times. Tired Eyes is the perfect go-to for a bit of an energy boost. Chris Greig & The Merchants have provided this at a time when we need it most and for that, I think we owe them a pretty big thank you.
