Chester based singer songwriter, Dan Oakey creates the perfect opening track for his debut single release, ‘People Are Changing’. From the get-go, it’s a song that really makes you think about the people’s attitudes and views changing as they grow older. With influences from Band of Horses, The Smiths and Arcade Fire, it’s clear that Oakey experiments with different sounds within the track separating him from just another ‘singer songwriter’. His music is fresh, exciting and most importantly leaves an impression on listeners.
The track eases listeners in with a unique blend of guitar hooks and dreamy melodies, you’ll want to listen to again and again. Oakey’s meaningful lyrics allow fans to explore the true themes of the song; about growing up and adapting to change – something we have all experienced or will experience soon. That’s what’s so clever about Oakey’s writing talents, he writes the type of significant songs where he explores the deeper meaning behind relevant issues that we can all relate to in our day-to-day life.
There’s a lyric in particular that stood out to me as soon I heard it: ‘I’m lost in thought, I ask myself is this how I’m meant to be feeling?’ The lyrics suggest we feel guilty for adapting to an overwhelming change in our life. From adolescent to adulthood, perhaps the biggest change of all where we find ourselves with different attitudes and opinions from when we were younger. The song also demonstrates the importance of change and as much as we may not want it, it’s inevitable as we get older.
Although, the theme itself is about the anxiety of change and not knowing how to accept it, the overall aura within the music of ‘People Are Changing’ creates soothing feel-good vibes that help display the message that despite us changing, it will all work out in the end! The type of song that will instantly put a smile on your face. That feeling that anything is possible is really captured throughout the track leaving listeners inspired, definitely the type of song we all need in our lives right now!
After listening to ‘People Are Changing’ I cannot wait to see what Oakey has lined up for us next… i mean if this is the quality the musician can produce in his debut single, can you imagine how good the rest of his tracks will be?!
