WHO? Conor Moore on lyrics, vocals and design and Ross McCann on music, composition and production make up Glaswegian duo, Hessian Renegade.
GENRE? Alternative Electronic Hip Hop
FOR FANS OF: Pendulum, Prodigy, Enter Shikari
THE MUSIC FILES FAVOURITE TRACK: Protein Shake. This was the first song I heard from Hessian Renegade and was instantly pulled in by the utter madness of the track. From ‘Glasgow uni wanker accents’, electronic explosions and catchy lyrics the track has everything you could want and more. Focusing on the ‘spice boys’ of our generation, ‘Protein Shake’ emphasises those self-obsessed gym lads that care far too much about their own appearance than their surroundings (not sure if that’s the real message behind it but that’s what I took from it and I LOVE IT). Be prepared for the chorus, ‘PROTEIN SHAKES ON THE DANCEFLOOR’ blasting around your head all day – the type of song that would erupt in a live setting!
WHY ARE WE DIGGIN THEM? The mix of RnB and electronic synths alongside the broad Scottish accent creates a style I can guarantee you’ve never heard before. This would be an incredible band to see live – you have no idea what to expect next yet that’s what makes it so brilliant.
THE MUSIC FILES FAVOURITE LYRICS: ‘When I look in the mirror, I don’t recognise myself, rock in a hard place, cracks in my shell’ (Targe)
GIG AND CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Hessian Renegade hit the scene at the end of 2016, releasing their debut single ‘Bread & Circuses’ which was instantly snatched up by Glasgow’s famous ‘Insane Championship Wrestling’ as the entrance music for former Zero G Champion and crowd favourite ‘Andy Wild’.
Following the warm reception of Bread & Circuses, the duo spent the next 2 years writing heavily and working on their live show, having their live debut, at the end of 2018, as main support for rising local talent and long time friends ‘Neshiima’. Hessian Renegade’s debut EP ‘Oral Spiel’, released 18/01/19, was supported by 3 music videos and garnered some local and international radio play.
2019 continued to be a busy year for the pair, signing a management contract with Reaction Management, having their first out of Glasgow show in Perth, supporting ‘Neshiima’, once more, at a sold out Cathouse show and releasing their single ‘Bulldog’. During all of this, Hessian had the opportunity to work with classically trained Violist Rachael Olivia Black aka LivMassive to create their collaborative EP and short Film ‘Erocean’ which released in March this year. 2019 ended on a high note with the remaster of ‘Bread & Circuses’ from the EP ‘Oral Spiel’ being included in The Herald Scotland’s Top 100 Tunes of 2019 at number 24, beating industry heavyweights such as Idlewild and Biffy Clyro.
The Covid-19 crisis has greatly disrupted what was looking to be a huge leap forward for the duo. 2020 saw the calendar fill up very quickly, including a support slot for the Grime Punk band ‘Pengshui’ on the ‘Kerrang! Fresh Blood Tour’ before the lockdown lead to the cancellation of thousands of gigs.
